In November 1999 The
Nature Conservancy has just released a final version of "A
Guide to Caribbean Vegetation Types: Classification Systems and
Descriptions," They have mounted 35 vegetation maps for the
Insular Caribbean (on an island-by-island basis---some maps are
at 1:500,000 scale, others are at 1:24,000).
This "Vegetation Atlas" is a terrific resource, because
what they have done is to take the best/most recent vegetative mapping
for an island, and then reclassified it, using the new standard
classification system.
This is a very powerful tool for mapping and comparing land covers
in the insular Caribbean. These existing maps can be consulted at
the USGS server at http://edcintl.cr.usgs.gov/igdn/tnc/metadata.html.
Please contact The
Nature Conservancy if you have updates and corrections
Note that the images available on this site are not actually maps---they
are JPEG images which cannot be directly queried as a GIS coverage
might be. It is likely that arrangements could be made with the
Nature Conservancy to secure regular GIS resources.
